Well, today is the first day of school for the remaining two "little ones" here at Stately Dear ol' Dad House. During the summer time... the livin' is easy. Dad gets up, whenever o'clock, does the three "S's" (I can explain that if anyone is confused at home) and rolls out of the house, to work, before his required start time. He gets to work early, most days, and has time to catch up on emails... read a few things on the internet and "shoot the crap" with co-workers (why one would go to work to "shoot crap" when so much is just laying around our yard is beyond me).
None of us really get up with Dad during the summer. Finn might charge up the stairs to hang out with him and run out to "top off the tank" (as Dad likes to say). Finn believes every day is a day to mark what is his and what is mine. I'm not sure what he thinks he's accomplishing because somebody else just follows along behind him and marks it up, too. Then we all nap until the kids come thundering downstairs...then the day is full of me trying to find ONE PLACE in this house that I can nap without retarded big dogs and loud children up in my stuff.
Once school starts... the world is really different. Its like the STORM before the calm. Dad is up at 6:10 SHARP and has the "S's" down to a 15 minute science. From there, he calls up the stairwell for the kids. He screams "Abi/Joey!!!" and they yell, in their little defeated voices "okay..." This is the one time in life that you can actually see a little smile on Dad's soul. The first day of school is the best but every day after... its the little jolt of satisfaction he needs to jump start his day.
From there, its an explosion of action, non-stop talking, TV, breakfasts, signing paper after paper, more non-stop talking and then... after an hour of activity... it is "drop a pin" quiet. At that point all of us claim a spot on a couch, bed or floor and ZONK OUT for the majority of the day. The sleeping in glorious. We don't even care if the dreaded MAIL MAN walks up on the porch. This is the rest a proper dog needs so they can be prepared for a night time of sleeping once Dad gets home again.
So here's to the education system of this country. If you do nothing else, you clear the way so a houseful of dogs in Northern Kentucky can get some sleep in the cool and crisp air of the morning... and afternoon.
